Holland 3 Sweden 0
The opening game struck fear into three of the four opponents. There were some of us who hadn't touched a Subbuteo player since the last tournament - however long ago that was. Mark had obviously not lost his touch. He cruised through the opening match, and whilst reigning champion Steve did not play at all badly, Mark looked like he'd never been away from the table. Turns out he hadn't! He'd had a 'practice' tournament with his brothers earlier in the year (which of course he won)! Credit where credit's due though, he's always been very good, although David Chett claims he was stitched up by having to play on the floor after a very long walk on his bad knees!.
Argentina 3 Morocco 0
As much to his own surprise as anyone else's, Simon started the tournament in fine style himself with a very steady 3-0 victory over John. Both players looked rusty on opening, but Argentina scored relatively early and settled the better. Two more goals followed and a swift move from attacking to defensive formation meant that Argentina held out for the three points.
Sweden 0 Argentina 1
By far the closest match of the round robin stage, this cagey affair looked like being a 0-0 scoreline from early on. An ironing of the pitch meant for lightning fast conditions, and both players took some time to find the correct weight. After settling down, decent play from both sides and some fine goalkeeping made this a far from dour affair. An Argentinean attack late on proved decisive from a long-range effort..
Morocco 0 Holland 3
At one time, these two players dominated the Subbuteo arena with similar ability, but with another ironing of the pitch, Mark rolled back the years and played his best Subbuteo for two decades. How John must regret showing the host how to fill up the iron! Another fine display from the, by now, overwhelming favourite meant that John had difficulty finding his touch and getting into the game. Morocco had few shooting opportunities and Holland could have won by a bigger margin than the final 3-0 scoreline.
And that's where the round robin ended! As the table had been settled in terms of the play-offs and the final, we didn't feel it worthwhile to repeat the last round robin games and instead move straight on to those same games in the play-offs. Mark and Simon had won both their games without conceding and headed for the final, whilst Steve and John would play first in the 3rd/4th play-off.
