A fantastic online resource is Peter Upton's Subbuteo Tribute Website. From the inital sets of 1947 right up to the photo-real sets of 2005, Peter's site has a history of the game, exhaustive team lists and accessory details. I've shamelessy taken info from this excellent site which is well worth a visit.
Subbuteo does a roaring trade on eBay particularly the early sets and the 60s and 70s heavyweight sets.
An excellent condition heavyweight team will fetch £15 up to £100, with a lightweight team going for between £5 and £10.
